COMMERCIAL SPOTS for SHEDRAIN UMBRELLAS.
Yes, even though we live in Portland, and carrying an umbrella might result in a little good-natured ribbing from a native, there are some local companies who still want to make sure you're covered during rainy season, with or without your Columbia jacket & waterproof Danner boots. One such company is Shedrain. They produce some of the best umbrella's in the world.
I was hired by Funnelbox Studios to lead the creative, write and pitch the ideas to Shedrain, direct three spots for their sales and marketing department and oversee post-production.
There were many challenges and variables to this shoot, but perhaps the most challenging part of this project is that I needed to come up with three different ideas that could be shot in one space, in one day, with one (or no cast members).
We had a pretty low budget (by commercial production standards), were limited to one shoot day, and had only one indoor and outdoor location. Ultimately one of the spots just didn't work and we ended up with a scaled down shoot on another day, but it was a very ambitious day none the less.
We also were shooting on the famed Phantom 4K Flex to take advantage of the slow motion capabilities and see that water (that we manufactured inside) crash into the umbrella in super slow motion.
We did manage to get through the day, without going into overtime, and that was certainly because of the absolute rockstar gaffers and grips we had on set that day. They were total pros, and were able to get things rigged and working very quickly. Not an easy task.
